Smerrills Farm goat herd started in January 2009 with 27 mixed breed nannies and one pure Boer buck which have been bred over the last 9 years to get 85 (and growing) pure Boer animals.
We had a few teething problems of kids getting out into other fields as they are notoriously cheeky and mischievous but now we are growing stronger and our herd getting bigger every year.
All our animals are born and bred on the farm, which means you have 100% traceability, and as we have a small herd we can avoid intensive farming practices that may affect meat quality and cause distress to the animals.
We pride ourselves on the level of care we provide to our herd whilst on the farm and at slaughter.
Grass is the staple diet of the herd and in summer the nannies run in and out with their kids feeding on hay and straw with concentrated feed for the kids. For winter the kids are based inside and we make silage (fermented grass) which provides a quality feed for the herd and other livestock. The nannies feed is supplemented with hay and the kids have other supplements and mineral blocks.
All animals are slaughtered at a nearby abattoir and then portioned by a respected local butcher.
